You sat down to work. You had time. Real, protected, nobody-needs-me-yet time.

And you spent 20 minutes of it staring at your screen trying to figure out where to start.

That is the specific kind of stuck I want to talk about today.

I used to think it was a discipline problem. Or a motivation problem. Or proof that I was not cut out for this.

It is not any of those things. It is what happens when you are trying to run a business out of your head.

Every task, every idea, every worry swirling around up there takes up space. And when your brain is at capacity it cannot choose. It cannot focus. It cannot create. It just freezes.

The Brain Dump Method is the first thing I reach for when that happens. It is also the foundation of everything I help women build inside the VIP Intensive Week. And in Episode 11 of The Visionary Mom Podcast I walk through the whole process start to finish.

Here is the short version. But go listen to the full episode after you read this. The personal story behind how I found this method is in there and I think it will hit.

Your Brain Was Not Built For This

Every unfinished task, every uncommitted idea, every thing you are holding in your head creates what productivity researcher David Allen calls an open loop. Your brain cannot rest until the loop is closed. So instead of creative energy and focus, you get constant background noise pulling your attention away from whatever is in front of you.

For moms running businesses, the mental load on top of that is enormous. For those of us with ADHD brains, it is louder still. The paralysis is real. It is not drama. It is a brain at capacity.

The solution is to stop asking your brain to hold everything and start putting it somewhere else.

What the Brain Dump Is

A brain dump is exactly what it sounds like. You take everything in your head and you get it out. Onto paper, onto a screen, anywhere outside of your brain.

You are not organizing. You are not prioritizing. You are emptying.

Everything comes out. The urgent and the someday. The exciting and the dreaded. The business task and the dentist appointment you keep forgetting to schedule. All of it.

When you do this, your brain relaxes. Creativity comes back. Focus comes back. The ability to make a decision in under two minutes comes back. And for me, the physical feeling is real. My shoulders drop. I breathe differently. I feel like a CEO again.

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” – Proverbs 16:3

The brain dump is an act of committing. You are taking what is in your head, putting it somewhere tangible, and releasing your grip on it.

How to Do It in  Steps

  1. Set a timer for 15 to 20 minutes.

Give it a container or it will either go on forever or you will rush through it.

  1. Open a blank page.

Paper is my preference. Writing it down feels more like releasing it. Use what you will actually do.

  1. Write everything down.

No filter. No order. Keep your pen moving. Ask yourself: what else am I carrying? What have I been putting off? What keeps following me around?

  1. When the timer goes off, stop.

Take a breath. Look at what you put on paper. That is what your brain has been holding.

  1. Take it to AI.

Copy everything from your page into a Google Doc. Then paste it into your AI tool of choice and ask it to organize your thoughts and tasks by priority. Let the AI do the sorting for you. You did the hard part. You got it out of your head. Now let the technology do what it is good at so you can walk away with a clear, prioritized action list in minutes.

When to Use It

Every Sunday as a weekly reset.

Before you look at your week, dump everything from the week before. What did not get done? What is still following you? Clear the hard drive before you write the new week.

As an emergency tool when you hit the wall.

Sitting down to work and cannot figure out where to start? Stop. Brain dump first. Clearing your head will save you more time than any amount of trying to force focus.

What the Brain Dump Reveals

When you do this consistently, you start to see patterns. The same kinds of tasks showing up every week. The same gaps. The same things falling through the cracks.

That is your business telling you where it needs structure.

If you are writing I need to follow up with that lead every single week, you do not have a follow-up system. If you are writing I need to figure out what to post every Monday, you do not have a content workflow.

The brain dump does not just clear your head. It diagnoses your business.

This is exactly where we start inside my VIP Intensive Week. We take what is in your head, name the patterns, and build systems around them so your business stops running on your mental energy alone. One focused week. Your client workflow, content process, team communication, and CEO schedule all built around your actual life.
